Community Renewal

In the Fall of 2007, 25 coalition members completed an introductory training to community renewal conducted by Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal.  This faith- based organization has developed an approach to changing communities that has been highly successful in several neighborhoods.  Their model for community change is being duplicated in several cities across the country and now in Africa!  We had the opportunity to visit with their staff, learn about their model for change, and visit some of the neighborhoods that have been transformed by their efforts. One neighborhood in Shreveport has seen a 40% reduction in crime due largely in part to their community renewal efforts!   You can learn more about their organization by visiting  their website at www.sbcr.us

What is community renewal?
Community renewal is not something that only needs to happen in low income neighborhoods!  It is something we would like to see happen in EVERY neighborhood!  Community renewal is not about building new homes or recreation centers, although some of those things do happen in areas where community renewal is involved.  The fundamental basis for community renewal is reconnecting people and developing relationships!  Remember the days when every one knew who their neighbors were?  In our technologically advanced world, we have lost touch with one another.  We are so busy, we are unable to see when others are hurting or lonely and they live right next door!  We believe that reconnecting people and rebuilding these neighborhood relationships will empower people to help one another, resolve conflicts, reduce crime, and raise healthier, drug-free kids!

Is Community Renewal happening in Ruston/Lincoln Parish?
Yes!  One neighborhood has already gotten started!  They've hosted a block party to get the ball rolling, developed a neighborhood directory, formed a meals on wheels team for neighbors who might be ill, have a new baby, or a death in the family, and much more!  To find out how to get started in your neighborhood...contact us!  The coalition would love to connect you with resources that will help you get started!
